Local Youngsters to Receive Backpacks Filled With School Supplies

COMCAST AND CRADLES TO CRAYONS HELP SOUTH BOSTON STUDENTS GEAR UP FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR

Comcast, the nation’s leading provider of entertainment, information and communications, today delivered 70 backpacks filled with classroom essentials to South Boston Neighborhood House in partnership with Cradles to Crayons, a non-profit organization dedicated to giving needy children what they need to be safe, warm and ready to learn.

“Comcast is committed to investing in our local communities, and with the school year fast approaching, we are excited to partner with Cradles to Crayons to support students and their families in South Boston, the neighborhood that is now home to our Boston employees,” said Vic Pascarelli, Area Vice President for Comcast.  “We’re glad to help so many students return to school with the tools they need, and we wish them all a very successful and productive year.”

To prepare for this effort, hundreds of Cradles to Crayons volunteers gathered at City Hall Plaza several weeks ago to sort school supplies and assemble backpacks to donate to the youngsters.  Comcast is a major sponsor of the Cradles to Crayons Back to School program.

“The average family spends over $500 for clothing and supplies to send their child back to school, which is something many families cannot afford,” said Lynn Margherio, CEO of Cradles to Crayons.  “We are grateful for Comcast’s support, which will provide 70 local children in need in South Boston with an extra reason to look forward to the upcoming school year.”

About Cradles to Crayons

Cradles to Crayons (C2C) provides children ages 0-12 living in poverty with the basic essentials they need to be safe, ready to learn, and feel valued. The C2C model serves as a bridge connecting those who have more with those who have less, breaking down some of the barriers within and between communities. C2C collects new and gently-used children’s items through community drives; processes and packages donations at its Giving Factory with the help of thousands of volunteers; and, through partnerships with social service agencies that identify specific children and their individual needs, distributes donated toys, books, clothes, and other items to children throughout Massachusetts at no charge. Through grass-roots civic engagement and meaningful volunteer opportunities, C2C reaches tens of thousands of need children annually, enables social service agencies to work more effectively, and mobilizes thousands of youth and adults to learn about the problem of poverty and become part of the solution.  For additional information about Cradles to Crayons or to learn more about how to support the organization, please visit: http://www.cradlestocrayons.org.
