Mayor's Cup Youth Baseball Tournament Announced

Hundreds of youngsters will “Play ball!” as the 2006 Mayor’s Cup Baseball Tournament sponsored by Comcast comes to South Boston’s Joe Moakley Park on July 15, 16, 22, and 23.

The competition will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, Sunday, July 16, and Saturday, July 22, with the championship rounds being held on Sunday, July 23, at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Mayor Thomas M. Menino will be on hand to throw out the first ball at 9:30 a.m. on July 15.

Thirty-two teams of 9 and 10-year-olds from 15 neighborhoods across the city will battle for the title of “Boston’s Best” over the course of two weekends.  The tournament, which is presented by the Boston Centers for Youth and Families in partnership with the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, Boston Red Sox, and the South Boston Little League, gives youngsters the chance to see how they match up with their counterparts from other city neighborhoods.

Participating teams include South Boston, North Dorchester-Upper Roxbury, Allston/Brighton, Mission Hill, Savin Hill, Charlestown, Brighton, Cedar Grove, The Roberto Clemente League, Hyde Park, Parkway, Jamaica Plain, East Boston, North End/Beacon Hill, and South End.

For information, please call Boston Centers for Youth and Families at (617) 635-4920, ext. 2116.
