Ultimate Family Affair
By Joe Kelly

The Curtis family of South Boston makes Monday’s family night with the entire group “kicking it” at the Ultimate Self Defense & Performance Center.

Dave and Susan Itri-Curtis have found a home every Monday for their family to learn self defense and enjoy each other’s company.  Five-year-old Spencer is a lively young man who has made great strides in the Little Dragon class. He is “An active contributor and always gives his all” according to owner/instructor Andrea Muccini. He is followed by the quieter Nicolas, seven, who Andrea describes as thoughtful and methodical when it comes time for class, she says Nicolas also likes to ask “lots of questions”.

Sue and Dave’s daughter Samantha is a straight  “A” 10th grade student at Boston Latin and recently won a contest that allowed her to spend a weekend at Boston University. Andrea asked Samantha if she would help out on Monday’s with a homework club for some of the karate students that needed extra help. Andrea provides this service free to all her students and Samantha enthusiastically agreed to help out. Andrea states that Samantha is one of Ultimate Self Defense’s “most precious commodities”.

Dave started working out after witnessing all the fun the kids were having and is currently striving for his green belt. Dave credits his wife Susan, referring to her as the “glue that holds us all together”, for making sure the family is prepared not only for karate but every days activities. Andrea says it is a pleasure to have Dave in the adult class as he always gives his best and also volunteers on Saturdays to work with the beginner classes.

“This a great place not only for karate, judo and grappling but is a place to help you set your goals and show you how to accomplish them”, said Dave. He goes on to say, “Ultimate Self Defense teaches discipline and hard work and you can take these lessons and use them for your entire life”. Dave and Susan would like to thank Andrea and her instructors Kim Reilly and Nick Fontaine for all their assistance. Andrea told Online how much she enjoys seeing the whole family unit come together for exercise and to socialize in such a positive fashion stating “The family that plays together, stays together”.
