South Boston players key to their respective teams
Senior Guard/Forward Gretchen Fritch is in the home stretch of her very productive career as a member of the Fontbonne Academy Ducks basketball team. Gretchen was a member of the 2002 championship team and has been a starter the past two plus seasons; she is currently averaging 10.8 points per contest. Gretchen is a multi-talented player who is tough to defend, with her abilities to drive to the basket from the wing and hit the three-point shot. She has helped the Ducks to a tournament appearance with an 11 and 6 record.
Junior Erin McDonough was a frequent starter on the J.V. team, playing point guard and shooting guard. A tenacious defender on the perimeter, Erin forces many turnovers that lead to easy baskets for her team. From the point position, she is very skilled at finding her open teammates.
Sophomore Michaela Cunningham is a first year J.V. player, whose ability to come off the bench and provide a spark to her team has been a huge asset. Michaela is in the mold of Gretchen with her ability to play guard and forward and hit the open three.
Freshwoman Christine Kelly has started every game this season at point guard on the Freshwoman team. She is averaging 5 points a game. Christine’s defense has helped turn a number of deficits around this year, rallying her team to victory.
A common denominator with all four of these young ladies is that they have all played travel basketball for Gate of Heaven teams over the years. Congratulations to all of the girls for a successful season.
We wish Gretchen and her Fontbonne varsity squad the best of luck in the upcoming state tournament.
