On Saturday, September 17, Saint Brendan’s beat Gate of Heaven, 43-20, at Gatey Hall, to capture the 2005 William Keating Youth Basketball League championship. Saint Brendan’s took an early 10-2, and would never look back, as the Fat Lady made an early appearance in this final tilt.
Although the Gate of Heaven squad was coached by the legendary coach John “Injun” Horan, victory was not to be realized on this rainy, cloudy day. Gatey had the height and the muscle and should have controlled the boards and the tempo of the game, but they didn’t. Costly turnovers and poor shot selections plagued the home team from start to finish while the eventual champs played a solid game.
For Saint Brendan’s, Joe Renehan scored eight points, while Owen Flanagan and Gabe Blanchette added seven apiece. For Gatey, Steve Shallmo netted 14 points and Mike Camejo finished with 4 points.
