SB Little League's 54th Awards Day
By Joe Kelly

South Boston Little League moved their annual banquet outdoors this year much to the delight of the players despite the stifling heat. Joe Evans Field was a great choice as it was recently upgraded for the SBLL playoffs. Next spring a new grass infield will be installed and will be rededicated in Joseph Evans name. M.C. for the day was League President Randy Carey and after Lorraine Cox recited the Pledge of Allegiance and Kevin Moran read the Little League Pledge. The players were treated to hot dogs, hamburgers, drinks and gifts from the Boston Red Sox. A bubble bounce, basketball shot game, miniature golf and a very popular dunk tank were available for the players to soak their favorite coaches.

The SBLL Champions Hub Video were presented with their trophies. The Championship trophies are in honor of the late Ken Preskenis. The Minor League Champion Iron Workers Local #7 received the Edward Sullivan Championship Award. Along with the longtime awards given for MVP, sportsmanship, participation, pitching and All-Stars a new Gold Glove award was presented to 12 players, one from each team, for their defensive prowess. Appreciation Awards were given to Ron Burton Jr., Cheryl McDaniels and the Boston Red Sox for their contributions to SBLL.

The final Award of the day was given to Mike Tower. Mike who has been an active member of SBLL for over 30 years was recognized for his dedication to the baseball youth of South Boston. A highlight of Mike’s coaching career came from 2001 through 2003 when he won the league championship three straight years with Mt. Washington Bank. The league would like to thank all the coaches, parents and league sponsors who give their time and energy to the league.
