Eagles Soar to Girls 18 & Under Title

By Joe Kelly

Despite being considered the underdog at the start of the playoffs Debbie Duffy’s Eagles turned up the defense and consistently knocked down the three point shot throughout the playoffs. In game one the Eagles jumped out quickly on a talented Tynan team behind Katie Nolan’s 8 points (2 three’s) and Kristen McCormick’s team high 16 points winning 52 to 48. The Tynan was led by Amanda McCarthy, 13 pts, and Katelyn Carr, 14 pts.

In the other semi-final game Gate of Heaven had 8 players score, led by league MVP Gretchen Fritch’s 19, cruising to a 69 to 41 victory over a West Roxbury squad that dressed only 5 players.

In the Championship game the Eagles Christine Duffy was not going to be denied as she exploded for 34 points in her teams 50 to 38 win over Gate of Heaven. “Duff” scored 24 of her points in the decisive 2nd half, at one point knocking down four hoops in a row including two of her five 3 point shots. Gretchen Fritch led her team with 15 points in the loss.

In the 15 and Under division the Lady Spartans rolled to a 46 to 15 win over the Tynan behind Katie O’Brien’s 12 points.

In the other semi-final the Gatey Magic stunned the Gate of Heaven squad with a come from behind victory, 43 to 40. A tenacious press by the Magic in the last 2 minutes helped them outscore their opponent by 8 and post the 3-point win. League Co-MVP Christine Duffy led the way with 28 and Chrissy Kelly tossed in 8. Sam and Marylin Joyce were key in the victory leading the press and forcing turnovers. Gate of Heaven was led by Michaela Cunningham’s 9 pts.

In the Championship game Dave Nagle’s Lady Spartans led wire-to-wire playing a smart, control game winning 44 to 32. The league’s other Co-MVP Amanda McCarthy netted 20 pts. and Brooke Linehan controlled the boards while picking up 8 points. Solid defense by the Gatey Magic’s Trystan Hogan and Haley Nee kept the game close while Christine Duffy led all scorers with 23 pts.

The 13 & Under McNally Club will also play on the 18th. Good luck to our Southie girls, the Eagles and the Lady Spartans, as they attempt to win their City Titles.
