2005 Girls BNBL Awards
By Joe Kelly

At the conclusion of each BNBL season John "Injun" Horan hands out ballots for the coaches and game officials to cast votes for League Unsung Hero and Most Valuable Player in the Girls 15 and 18 & Under divisions.  Injun started this tradition 11 years ago as a tribute to long time girls basketball advocate and coach Jerry Gilcoine.

This years 15 & Under winners is the Lady Spartans Katie O’Brien for Unsung Hero. Katie is one of girl’s basketballs most improved players. Katie has a unique ability to control both the offensive and defensive boards and has a great finishing touch. Katie will be entering Latin Academy this fall. This years MVP voting ended in a tie between two former winners, Gatey Magic’s Christine Duffy (2003) of Archbishop Williams, and the Lady Spartan’s Amanda McCarthy (2004) of Savio Prep. Both of these talented young ladies were high-scoring starting guards for their respective varsity teams and hope to pick up where they left off last high school basketball season.

The 18 & Under voting resulted in two ends of the age spectrum. The Unsung Hero award went to first year player Gate of Heaven’s Laura O’Donnell, 13 yrs. old. Laura will be an 8th grader at Gate Of Heaven in September and continues to grow as a basketball player.  Laura see’s the entire floor and her pinpoint passes dazzle the crowd. Her dad Bernie tells the story of how last winter Laura felt she did not play well in a particular CYO game, “At 10 O’clock that night she went out and shoveled the yard and shot jumpers for an hour before her mom Mary made her come in”.

The MVP award was deservedly given to Gate of Heaven’s Gretchen Fritch. The upcoming senior at Fontbonne Academy was practically unstoppable when she drove to the hoop and her ability to hit the 3-point shot from any range was amazing.

Congratulations to the winners and all the girls that, once again, played through the brutal summer heat making Girls BNBL a tremendous league.
