The 2005 Harry McDonough Sailing Program is underway and there's still plenty of sailing and racing action left to be done down at the Lagoon.
There are still open slots left for any youngsters, from 8 to 18, willing to learn how to sail. The last class begins August 22. The program is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Those sea enthusiasts who are interested in signing up must complete a one-week class that is held from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Director Greene is hoping to see some of those open slots filled up. Last Sunday at the L Street Bathhouse, registrations were realized, but if anyone is interested, please call the program at 617-268-8556.
In addition to sailing, Save the Harbor, Save the Bay, has made it possible for the sailors to study the local sea habitat. Marine Biologist Jen Smith, along with two other colleagues, is teaching "Fishing 101" at the Lagoon and at other locales.
"We help the kids connect to their environment, studying and trying to understand sea life," said Smith. "We are hoping to create a youth stewardship, so that in the future they will be there to take care of life in the harbor. It's a great program, we have expanded it, and this year I'm here five days a week with the kids."
Racing and windsurfing classes are also available, and at the end of the summer the racing finale and regatta will be held.
Director Greene and his limited crew work hard to meet the demands of this life-enriching program.
But, like elsewhere, funding is down.
So, if you know of any avenues that Director Greene could travel to assist him and the sailing program, please feel free to give him a call.
