Last Saturday morning, under a beautiful May sky, around a hundred willing workers showed up for state Sen. Jack Hart’s annual cleanup of Pleasure Bay. Hart has been doing this each year as a way to assist the Department of Conservation and Recreation (the DCR) with maintaining the beaches for the summer months.
Many of these workers were from the Massachusetts Trail Court’s Community Service Program. They were performing much-needed projects in lieu of serving time, a constructive way to address a number of issues within the state’s legal system. Steve Price, Executive Director of Community Corrections, and Kevin Duggan, statewide Supervisor of the Community Service Program, were on hand to oversee their efforts.
The South Boston Community “Grime” Watch headed by Ed Oliver-Bohld, “Boston Cares”, the DCR, and many concerned individuals made quick work of the cleanup, which was well-and-truly finished sooner than expected.
Jack Hart paid tribute to the teamwork evidenced between all of the participants, and he concluded his remarks by narrating that well-known local quatrain:
“Why spend a week
In Martinique,
When you can spend the day
At Pleasure Bay?”
