A Quick Update on the Parade
By Rick Winterson

According to John “Wacko” Hurley, the St. Patrick’s Day/Evacuation Day Parade plans are in good shape.  The Parade will equal or exceed last year’s extravaganza.  It will step off at 1 p.m., Sunday, March 19, from the staging area at the end of West Broadway, and it will provide a fitting climax to South Boston’s version of the Mardi Gras season.

More than 30 bands are expected, among them eight pipe bands and four colonial units.  The Hallemore and Budweiser Clydesdales will be featured.  The Mass Mutiny women’s football team is marching.  And the DCR is sending its young marching band that is so popular here during the summer months.

New units include the 150-strong Queen’s University Band (Canada).  Chancellor Karen Hitchcock and her husband will be Wacko’s guests for the Parade.  The New Hampshire Horse Guards are coming down from Concord for the first time in recent years.

As usual, a ship will be here to help us observe the day.  It’s the USS Philippines CG-58, commanded by Capt. Eugene F. Moran, Jr.  A contingent of its sailors will march with us.
