Second Annual Fundraiser for St. Francis House
By Rick Winterson

Martin Tierney is a man from the Old Sod now living in South Boston, who has a strong sense of right and wrong.  Late last year, he became aware of the difficulties faced by homeless people around the City of Boston.  In fact, he became a little angry at the situation, so he decided to take action.  The result was the first fundraiser for the benefit of the homeless, who are aided by the St. Francis House in Downtown Crossing.  The results were impressive – over $5,000 raised and sent to the House.

This year, Martin Tierney is going to do it all over again.  He’ll be throwing a Christmas Dance on Sunday, December 11.  It will take place at VFW Post #6356 on Ellery Street in Andrew Square.  The music of Ireland will be featured.  The affair lasts from 3:30 p.m. until 7 p.m.

The donation is just $10.  Volunteers are responsible for all the arrangements, so all proceeds will go to the St. Francis House for use on helping homeless people during this winter.  Confidentially, Martin is hoping to at least double the amount raised last year.

Everyone is welcome.  Dance music will be emphasized, so everyone has to be on their feet.  It will be a fantastic way to spend a Sunday afternoon and evening during a joyful Christmas season.  If you need any further persuasion, come see Martin dance – he’s quite the high stepper.

Martin has enlisted many volunteers.  Among them is Kelly Richardson, whom you probably know as the owner (founder, president, treasurer, and so on) of Kelly’s Kleaners.  She’ll be selling tickets and soliciting donations.  Another volunteer helping the cause is Paul McGrath.  He’s in charge of setting up and manning the door, as well as selling advance tickets.

By the way, Martin’s fundraiser has been officially approved by the St. Francis House, in the form of a letter to him from its Development Director, Erin O’Connell Casey.  The St. Francis House is a 501(c)3 tax exempt, non-profit institution that serves more than 700 poor or homeless men and women every day.  It is New England’s largest day shelter.

But most of all, just come out on Sunday, the 11th, for a great time at the VFW post – it’s that season of the year.

NOTE:  For tickets, call Martin Tierney (617-269-8821), Kelly Richardson (617-269-7697), or Paul McGrath (617-293-8737).
