| Steppingstone Scholars Prepare For Success |
On Saturday morning at Boston Latin Academy in Dorchester, the call "Good Morning, Steppingstone!" reverberates around the auditorium. It’s Katie Joseph, Dean of Academic Preparation at The Steppingstone Academy, as she welcomes 130 fifth and sixth grade students assembled for Community Time. Across town at the Commonwealth School, 8th grade students are similarly welcomed to Steppingstone’s Academy Nine. Instead of staying home to watch cartoons, these students from across Boston are eager to tackle another challenging day of academics. Scholars, as Steppingstone students are called, can look forward to acting out a scene from the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, or reviewing quantitative skills in a game of math baseball. It all takes place at The Steppingstone Foundation's 14-month tuition-free summer, after-school, and Saturday programs, designed to prepare Boston schoolchildren for entrance and success at public exam and independent schools.
John Arias, an Academy Nine Scholar from South Boston, believes Steppingstone has and will continue to help him achieve his goals. "By the end of Steppingstone I want to get into a really good high school, and from there to get into a good college. Then I can become someone really important!" Steppingstone teachers and staff provide a focused, supportive environment and Scholars provide hard work, making an equation that adds up to unlimited possibilities.
The Steppingstone Academy and Academy Nine are committed to the idea that all children deserve the opportunities an excellent education can offer. Placement schools include Boston Latin School, Boston Latin Academy, John D. O'Bryant School of Mathematics and Science, and prestigious independent schools in the greater Boston area. After attending these schools, Scholars have gone on to be successful at some of the nation’s most selective colleges and universities, including Harvard College, Boston University, Morehouse College, Columbia University and Williams College.
The first step in a student’s journey through Steppingstone is completing an application. Steppingstone seeks highly motivated students with strong family support. Students can apply to The Steppingstone Academy or Academy Nine in the winter of their 4th, 5th, or 7th grade year, and interested families should attend a Family Information Meeting in November, December, or January to learn more about the program and the application process. Our next Family Information Meeting will be on Saturday December 17. 5th grade families are asked to attend from 10a.m to 12p.m., and 4th grade families are asked to attend from 1 to 3p.m. This meeting will be held at Boston Latin Academy at 205 Townsend Street. Those interested in receiving more information for a 4th, 5th, or 7th grade Boston student can call 617-423-6300.
