| Fundraiser for US Troops and Families |
Hundreds are expected to gather at Florian Hall November 11 for a fundraising event to benefit a unique education scholarship program for U.S. military serving in Iraq and other forward areas.
Nationally-known comedian Jimmy Tingle will headline the entertainment lineup for “A Tribute to the Troops.” All proceeds will benefit the Tribute to the Troops Scholarship Fund, established by a group of area residents who wish to assist U.S. troops and their families as they pursue educational goals. The Fund will distribute $500 scholarships for soldiers and their spouses or children as they advance their education.
“We wanted to create a program that would help the troops when they return. If they decide to take a course or enter an advanced education program, the $500 scholarship would go directly to the school and be of assistance to them. A troop’s spouse or children enrolled in school would also qualify. If they have enough grants from the government then school supplies such as a laptop would be applicable as well. It is our way of showing our appreciation for their efforts,” said Dorchester resident Jimmy Murphy, one of the event organizers.
Murphy became involved in the effort, inspired by his brother, Brendan, who is currently serving in the Army as a combat medic, stationed in Iraq. Murphy’s neighbors, both Veterans, thought an effort was needed as well.
The fundraising event begins at 7 p.m. In addition to Jimmy Tingle’s performance, there will be dancing, a disc jockey, color guard, bagpipe performance, and other celebrity entertainers. The program will feature a hot/cold buffet, raffles, silent auction, prizes and a cash bar.
Tickets are $20. Checks for tickets or donations may be made payable to the Tribute to the Troops Scholarship Fund, c/o Mount Washington Bank, 501 Southampton St., South Boston, MA 02127.
