Joe Nee Becomes a Julie's Angel
By Rick Winterson

Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary says that an “angel” is usually depicted with a halo and wings.  That doesn’t fit Joseph “Dodo” Nee very well.  Webster goes on to define “angel” as “a guardian spirit or guiding influence” and “a kind, loving person”.  Now we’re getting closer to describing Joe Nee accurately.

Joe Nee is a lifelong resident of South Boston.  He and Susan Nee have been married more than 30 years.  They have three children – Kelly, Brian, and Kristin – and a new grandchild.

After graduating from South Boston High, he immediately joined the Marine Corps.  When he completed his tour of duty, he obtained a degree in Business Management from Newbury College.

Nee’s career includes 27 years in the Boston Fire Department, from which he retired as an Assistant Superintendent of Maintenance.  He now works for Frank McCourt’s company as its Director of Community Relations.  In this position, Joe Nee deals extensively with local non-profits, as well as with many issues that affect the well-being of the South Boston community.

In addition, his involvement in the community includes a large number of volunteer positions:  the Firefighter Credit Union (Director), Firefighters Relief Fund (Trustee), the Neighborhood House (Vice President), the Collaborative Center (President), Laboure Center (Chairman), the Community Development Foundation (President), and Julie’s Family Learning Program (Board Member).  The only things that can keep up with him are his grin, his cheerful nature, and his nickname “Dodo” – he still won’t say where that comes from.

His award as a “Julie’s Angel” will become one of many he has received.  He told Online, “I am honored to receive this award.  Sr. Jean and Sr. Louise (of Julie’s) are the best people in this town.  I met them five years ago, and I fell in love with what they were doing.”

The Angel Awards will be given out at Julie’s Sixth Annual Dinner, Wednesday evening, November 2, at the I.B.E.W. Hall.  Joining Joe “Dodo” Nee as a “Julie’s Angel” are James Coyle, Secretary Treasurer of the Trades Council, and Micho Spring, U.S. Chairman of Weber Shandwick.
