Sean Maddox Scholarship Awarded

Throughout the year the South Boston Neighborhood House offers a variety of services designed to encourage, inspire and help our members acquire stronger study skills and improve academic achievement.  Beginning in our Early Care and Education Programs where teachers prepare students for Kindergarten and continuing in our School Age Community Learning Center, education is a strong part of the daily curriculum.

By opening their minds to education and providing them with the opportunity to see and understand the many options that are open to them, we have seen an increase in the number of participants succeeding in High School, attending college and realizing that there are options for them – decreasing the notion that there is “nothing out there for me.”

Through the generosity and kindness of several families with strong ties to the South Boston Neighborhood House, we are able to offer a number of Scholarships to students preparing to enter both High School and College.  Again, working to support the educational efforts of the students and their families.

The Sean Maddox Scholarship is awarded annually at the Ollie Road Race. This scholarship fund provides one year of financial support, $1,000.00, to a deserving South Boston resident who is entering college.  The scholarship is primarily focused on a student entering the nursing/medical or related fields of study.  The scholarship is given in memory of Sean Maddox through the generosity of her family.

This year the Maddox family decided to recognize two outstanding South Boston young women.  Carolyn Gearin, who is attending Quincy College and Jill Litto, who is attending the University of Southern Maine, were awarded the 2005 Sean Maddox Scholarship.  Carolyn is the daughter of John and Sheila Gearin from East Second Street and Jill is the daughter of Richie and Laurie Litto from Brewster Street.
