Using Your Street Smarts
By Kevin Devlin

Play it safe when you are walking on city streets

Violence and crime is an old friend we rather not see but must be aware of at all times. So, when you are out and about, be careful and cognizant of your surroundings.

Here are some safety tips that should be followed by everyone, young and old.

      * Stay alert and "TUNED" into your surroundings. Be observant of who's in front of and behind you. Don't get distracted. Don't daydream, be alert.

     * Communicate the message that you are calm, confident, and know where you are going. "Stand" Tall" and walk with a purpose, and make quick eye contact with people around you.

     * This is really important. "TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS" Trust that gut feeling that something's not right. If you feel uncomfortable in a place or a situation, leave immediately.

     * Plan the safest route to your destination. Stick to well-lighted streets. Stay away from shrubs, dark doorways, and alleys where people can hide.

     * If you walk at night, vary the route, and walk with a companion whenever possible. Know your neighborhood.

     * Don't overload yourself with packages and don't wear shoes or clothing that restricts your ability to escape a would-be attacker.

     * Avoid displaying cash or jewelry.

     * Carry a purse close to your body, not dangling by the straps, and keep a firm grip on it. Carry a wallet in an inside coat or front trouser pocket.

    * If you think someone is following you, abruptly switch directions and walk toward an open store, restaurant or lighted home.

    * Walk facing traffic so you can see approaching cars.

    * If you are being followed by someone in a car, change direction immediately and make a visible point of writing down the license plate number.

    * Be careful when people ask you for directions. Always reply from a distance and never get too close to any vehicle.

     * If you suspect you arte being followed by someone on foot, cross the street and head for the nearest well-lighted populated area. Walk quickly to a house or store to call police.
