Sully's Celebrates 60th Season Opener
By Deirdra Dostou

February sea breezes didn’t stop Sully’s enthusiasts and faithful from visiting opening day at seaside eatery.

With over 400 pounds of hot dogs sold over this year’s opening weekend, owner Brendan Sullivan explained, “Even with the snow showers on Saturday afternoon people just wanted to come and get their hot dog or burger”.

“It reminds me of summer. It’s 30 degrees out and it’s windy and blowing and I don’t care. I’ve got my lemonade and hot dog and I’m happy.” explained Sean Fennelly who made the trip from Quincy.

The tail end of winter weather didn’t dampen spirits as faithful locals and out-of-towners made the annual opening day pilgrimage to the Castle Island favorite. Celebrating its 60th season opener, lines formed steadily through the early afternoon rush on Saturday.

“We knew it was opening day and we knew it would be a nice place to eat.” explained South Boston resident Josie Glausen who visited with college friend Erica Fox from Cape Cod. Fox continued, “It’s by the beach and reminds us summer is coming soon”.

“Last year on opening day we went through 230 lbs of hot dogs” explained Sullivan, the restaurants’ 3rd generational family owner. Sullivan has managed the South Boston favorite since 2006. “My grandfather started Sullivan’s in 1951 and my dad in 1976. We did a lot of work in the past months in the lobby.” With new ketchup pumps and improved counter space layout, “We hope for a smoother transition for people to get their items ready.”

Sullivan’s founder, Dorchester native and former City Councilor Daniel F. Sullivan, started the business after his tenure in the council through the 1940’s. “He retired and wanted to do something different. This is our third building. We went from a tin shack with drop down shutters to a cinderblock building. We built this in ’88. It allows us to stay open later into the season and is a better facility”.

“It’s a Hynes family tradition to come to Sullivan’s on opening day” explained Michelle Hynes who enjoyed the outdoor view with her family. From lobster rolls to fish and chips, traditional New England fare is served up but asked why he comes to Sullivan’s on opening day, young Braeden Hynes had two words, “Hot dogs!”

Sullivan’s new opening week promotional coupon is redeemable until Thursday, March 4th for ½ off hotdogs. For more information see the coupon in South Boston Online or visit www.sullivanscastleisland.com
