Nick Collins 6-point Plan to Keep Drugs out of our Neighborhoods
Press Release

While many people have given up on the ‘War on Drugs’, Nick Collins, Candidate for State Representative for the Fourth Suffolk District declared, “The battle has just begun.”

“Drug abuse and distribution is a plague, and I know far too many young people who have overdosed,” said Collins.”I know families who have buried a child or cried all night worrying about whether they will. The lives of entire families are debilitated by the behavior of their drug-addicted relative.”

Collins believes that in order to try fix a problem, a community has to first have the courage to admit the problem and then work together to try to solve it.

This week Collins has proposed a 6-point plan to keep drugs out of our neighborhoods.

1.     LOCAL CRIME/DRUG TIP-LINE

Set up a local confidential tip-line so that residents can report drug activity.

2.     INCREASE TREATMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Revive South Boston/Dorchester against Drugs public information network. Maintain funding to successful treatment facilities and establish a dedicated unit for women.

3.     BRING BACK DAYTIME POLICE DRUG UNIT

The drug control unit is very effective and rapid response is critical. Adding resources will increase surveillances and arrests.

4.     HOST NEIGHBORHOOD SUMMITS

By conducting a summit of parents, children, clergy, non-profits, business owners, neighborhood leaders and government agencies we can develop a strategy to organize our district’s approach to the problem and re-deploy resources.

5.     INCREASE NEIGHBORHOOD PATROLS

We need to increase the number of police officers patrolling our streets and parks. Police staffing levels are dangerously low and the criminals know it.

6.     EXPAND THE CRIME WATCH PROGRAM

Work to increase the number of crime watch groups, which are a very effective tool in combating crime and will make the Tip-Line more valuable.

“I pledge to do all that I can to fight this battle and I will deliver results for all of us,” said Collins.
