Seventh “Ladies Night” Is Friday, November 30

By Rick Winterson

South Boston is a neighborhood of traditions.  One event that became a tradition overnight is Ladies Night, which benefits the Neighborhood House Girls Group.  On the evening of November 30, the Seventh Ladies Night will be held at the Neighborhood House on H Street.  Don’t miss it – if you’re a shopper, you’ll be amazed and delighted at what you’ll find.

The Seventh Annual Ladies Night is planned for Friday evening, November 30, from 7 to 11 p.m.  It will be held (as usual) in the South Boston Neighborhood House at 136 H Street.  This much-anticipated event began in 2006; since then, it has earned a well-deserved place on the roster of memorable Southie “times”.  This year, Ladies Night benefits the Neighborhood House Girls Group training program at Ultimate Self Defense.

Whether you are new to South Boston or you’ve been born and brought up here, you won’t want to miss Ladies Night.  Coming on November 30 as it does, Ladies Night provides you a perfect alternative to the chaos of Black Friday.  Imagine a Friday evening shopping expedition right here in South Boston - a nearby, quietly elegant shopping experience designed for you, which includes shopping (of course), spa treatments onsite at the Neighborhood House, signature martinis at the cash bar (an “Ollie”-politan, anyone?), wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres, and desserts.  Admission to Ladies Night is a modest $10; spa treatments are an equally modest $10 each.

This year’s first-time Ladies Night participants offer shopping opportunities that are quite unusual, to say the least.  Look for Brian Johnson’s “Local Uncommon” green crafts.  Examine his hand-etched glassware of all sizes, bearing maps of South Boston and elsewhere.  Stella Marie Soap Co. is offering unique, one-of-a-kind, “natural soaps with a quirky flair”.  Kristina Buckley will display stationery and other fine paper products from her enterprise, “Paper Doll Boston”.  Elaine Fallon Imports from Worcester is coming to South Boston.  She’ll bring multi-national (Ireland, France, Japan) classic fashion wear that is simply not available anywhere else in the U.S.

You might well ask about the Girls Group program that benefits from Ladies Night.  For years, Andrea Muccini, the founder of South Boston’s Ultimate Self Defense, has partnered with the Neighborhood House and other agencies to train young girls (10 to 18) to take care of themselves.  Andrea has thrown open her facility and her expertise to these girls.  This year’s Ladies Night will raise money for scholarships to continue the training of these young girls, who are interested in going on with the Ultimate Self Defense programs.

Here’s a sample of what one young girl says about the Girls Group program:  “I want to do martial arts with Andrea Muccini at Ultimate Self Defense to achieve confidence … with the self-esteem I’ll get for the rest of my life, I would be a much different person – in the best way possible.”

You’ll see many of the original supporters of Ladies Night at the 2012 event as well – Beauty Bar (Dyan La Rosa), Karen’s Boutique (Karen Stanley), Nicole Cronin’s Ku De Ta, and Habit will be on hand.  Old faithful Steve Niehardt from East Side Wines (online and on Eighth Street) will emcee the wine-tasting for you once again.

If all this isn’t enough to persuade you to look in at Ladies Night, consider the raffle prizes.  Desirable hotel packages include a stay at the Park Plaza and the Downtown Hilton downtown.  Sports memorabilia will allow you to shop for himself.  Connie Baldner has generously donated a $250 cleaning package, courtesy of her business “Fresh as a Daisy”.

Join 200 or more South Boston ladies for Ladies Night – the best way to kick off the Holiday Season in The Old Home Town.
